Worldbuilding with Arium (SRD)
This closed System Reference Document (SRD) contains a simplified version of the critically-acclaimed, best-selling rules for worldbuilding the Arium way. Usage rights are outlined in the Licensing & Logo Guidelines section of this page.
The Storm
An Arium Storm is the name for a series of actions that two or more people will take seven times over the course of creating a world with Arium.
- Timed Ideating: Silently write individual ideas on a physical or virtual sticky note relating to the current step. Use a live timer (phone, watch, or online).
- Collaborating: Review all produced ideas together and group like items. Players may also propose grouping any two ideas because they are better together than apart. The people who wrote the ideas must agree to this grouping.
- Voting: Using a unique mark, each player votes for their favorite groupings of ideas. Players receive one vote per every three idea groups.
The group decides how many votes are required to move ideas to canon for the world. The rest are discarded.
The Steps
Players will perform a Storm for each of the following Arium Steps:
- Lacunae: What does not belong in this world? Use this step for safety and also for creative exclusions.
- Universal: Vibes, mainly. Genre and tone. Nothing concrete.
- Big Picture: How does it all work? Is there magic? What's the tech level?
- Culture & Organizations: What types of people live here and what is their history? What types of organizations have they created?
- Landmarks: Specific instances of a place you could point to on a city map. Buildings, monuments, and natural features.
- People: Who inhabits this world? What are their personalities, looks, and names?
- Goodies: What unique items, artifacts, or resources exist in this world? Must be narratively relevant, and vehicle sized or smaller.
What Next?
Take the final ideas (and any notes from your discussions) and use them as the basis for your creations!
